Mt. Airy, NC (Mayberry)

Mt. Airy is the birthplace of actor Andy Griffith and the town that inspired the famous TV show, Mayberry.  It is about 40 minutes from the cabins.  If you visit on Saturday morning, the local musicians come to town and play for free at the original downtown movie theater.  Radio station WPAQ has been broadcasting this weekly event for many decades on the Merry Go Round show and it is said to be the longest running live radio show!  Even longer than the Grand Ol Opry!  There are many great shops downtown and Snappy's Grill and Floyd's Barber Shop that you saw on the Andy Griffith TV Show are still there!  It is a really cool little town!  The Andy Griffith Museum and Playhouse are located there also.  It's like going back in time.

Pilot Mountain State Park

Andy Griffith referred to it on his TV show as "Mt. Pilot".  You can actually see Pilot Mountain from our cabin even though it's over 50 miles away!  This is a great state park for hiking and it is only a short 15 minute drive from Mt. Airy. If you have time, I highly recommend that you visit this park and hike around the knob of the mountain. It has a feel of walking around a giant castle and there are spectacular views.

Eng and Chang toured the world as a circus act.  When they retired from the circus, they moved to Traphill, NC and opened a general store. (They had performed in the area and thought the people there were nice and friendly.)  They married two local sisters and had over 20 children.  When Eng died, Chang died an hour later.  They were buried near Mt Airy (Mayberry) NC.  Their home place is located on Long Bottom Road, just a short distance from the back entrance of Stone Mountain State Park.  The house is not open to the public but, you can drive by to see it.  It is the large white house sitting back off the road, to the left of the Old Roaring River Baptist Church.  A very historic site to see.
